About Us
Bridging Ancient Wisdom
and Modern Understanding
Sendero Expeditions sparks learning about history and heritage through the lens of archaeology. We know we’ve done our job well when the respect for these lands and its people are strengthened over the next five years.
This cultural education project is offered by Sendero Expeditions (Canada) with all ground work and logistics managed and executed by our Mexican partners and contractors.
In facilitating high-level, immersive workshops we aim to provide a deep-dive into the history, archaeology, and archaeo-astronomy of Mexico. Local hereditary guardians and academic experts share their knowledge and wisdom, turning this historical site into an active classroom.
Through immersive and participatory field studies and workshops, including an active excavation, participants become contributors to the preservation of Mexican culture and heritage.
Your Educational Expedition Knowledge Keepers
Professor Rodolfo
Lobato Rodríguez
Rodolfo is the principal architect of the modern rediscovery of Xihuacan. A senior researcher at the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), he arrived on the Costa Grande in 2007 to decipher a landscape that had remained silent for over a millennium.
His work has radically challenged maps of ancient power, demonstrating that this region was a sophisticated sovereign center, not an outpost.
Rodolfo's collaboration with Sendero Expeditions stems from a commitment to authentic preservation. By sharing his research he is the bridge between the academic world and those seeking the unvarnished truth of human history.
"My work with Sendero is about providing the context for a profound shift in perspective. I have dedicated the last 15 years to unearthing this city because the Cuitlatec system, their way of interpreting the stars to govern the survival of an entire region, offers a fundamental clarity that is extraordinarily relevant today.”
Professor Loboto Rodriguez
This man, who is a local elder and descendant of Cuitlatec (the people of Xihuacan), and shares his ancestral wisdom in the form of dance and drumming after a soul stirring call to the four corners that starts your ritual.
Eric
Eric is also an elder from the local village Soledad de Maciel. He welcomes each participant with a copal smoke cleansing ritual.
Eric’s vast knowledge of area and its deeply rooted history transforms the site into a classroom rich with history and culture spanning structural and hydrological engineering, astro-archeology, rituals and local tales gathered from decades of the town’s efforts in defending the site from government interference and looters.
Eric’s warm smile and easy going character will lead you through your educational expedition with ease.
Alejandra
At home in her organic restaurant, which is the location of our community meal for those who participate in the The Dig, Alejandra offers produce from her own garden for recipes handed down over generations.
Susan Jensen
The journey has been anything but ordinary. Through every step, we’ve focused on staying true to our values and making space for thoughtful, lasting work.
Sendero is a reflection of what a key value: creating work that enriches.
Through expert-led educational workshops and field research expeditions, Sendero is The Path to a deeper understanding of Mexico’s rich history, heritage, and culture.
We bridge the gap between academic discovery and immersive learning, ensuring every participant leaves with a profound connection to the ancient world and a contribution to its preservation.

How We Operate
To ensure the highest standards, our educational expeditions are built on three pillars:
Academic Foundation: Every participant receives a Digital Field Kit prior to arrival, featuring briefings from expert archeologist Professor Lobato and local site guardians.
Facilitated Site Demonstrations & Lessons: We coordinate the logistics for "on-site laboratories" to process artifacts the ancients once used, and map celestial alignments that were central to ancient civilizations across Coste Grande.
Resilience Contribution: A portion of every program fee supports the local village members’ ancestral heritage ensuring cultural pride grows AND ongoing research and preservation of the archaeological sites of study.ensuring that history remains alive for future generations
